Here I come... by MrGlory Here I come... by MrGlory
Pedro XX, the modern "Jolly Green" Combat Rescuemen (4 aircrew and 2 ParaRescue--PJ's) take off from Camp Bastion in Helmand Valley Afghanistan to save an IED victim.

I took this during a rapid changeover as I had just returned from a mission myself and the crew coming on shift threw their gear on the Pave Hawk with the blades still turning and took off.

Articles written on my unit during this time period: [link] and [link]

And some motion footage I shot/edited: [link]

Is there a reason that the door gun on this helo is a fifty instead of a minigun?

It's location/threat dependent. The .50 is good against vehicles/light armor, and as argued by the proponents of the .50 there, will have deeper penetration into the mud huts in Afghanistan, it's also longer range.

However, I did not agree with it's selection in this case as the rate of fire is considerably slower and the engagements have usually been surprise attacks by man sized targets at standard range where rate of fire is more important (moving through as many axis as we do at the same time at a high rate of speed while trying to track a target is much more difficult than people think). A few missions later the Minigun was put back on the aircraft. In the end it's up to the deployed unit commander at the time and enough of us made a solid case for the Minigun that we got it back.
